HOUSE OF CARPETS – CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

One would say that being married and working together might not always be such a good idea, but for Carlo and Ronel Jacobs this is a vital part of their success. Both being business people, Carlo owned and operated Jacobs Sleepwaens and Jacobs Afslaers, while Ronel owned and operated Tombola – a supplier of carpets – all three between 1999 and 2008. After the decision to sell all their businesses, they felt that loose carpets were a viable trade at the time and that was an area in which they gained considerable business experience and decided to continue with it, but under another brand name. They sold the carpets from their home in the main road, Bredasdorp, and thus started one of the greatest journeys of their lives. Carlo and Ronel acknowledges that it was very difficult to do business in a new town, but the family soon gained the trust of the community and attributes it to their honest way of trading, their excellent service and exceptional products. Carlo says there are a few things that make their business unique. Their customers get warm, personal service and very competitive prices. He is very particular when he selects new products to ensure that it is of good quality. They go out of their way to please customers and go to great lengths to make sure they are satisfied with what they bought. They also offer exceptional after service. Their wish is that their customers are so happy with the service and products that they will return regularly.

Carlo and Ronel strongly believe that their success lies in the fact that they are working in their own business. They are there to keep an eye and give constant assistance. They believe in having a good accountant and making calculated business choices. They treat people the way they want to be treated by others and for that same reason they have a very low staff turnover. There are eight other staff members in this formidable team. Two of the eight have been with the company for a very long time. Paulina has been with the family businesses since the year 2000 and Anna joined them in 2006. Oom Gawie, who is retired now, has also been in the businesses for many, many years. Anna enjoys working with people and believes that the clients are most important. Pauline says that your attitude towards your work is key to your success. “Don’t do something with the mentality that it is just a job, always give your best.”

Carlo and Ronel also believe strongly in the training and development of their staff. All the staff are computer literate and trained in Pastel. They say they will continue doing so even if this would mean that staff members will leave to explore better positions at bigger companies. For the Jacobs couple, this is their investment in the community. They strive daily towards excellence and good stewardship over that which was entrusted to them by their Creator. They recognise that all is given by grace and must be received with thankfulness. There is a lot of motivation in the realisation that someone is thankful for what you have done for him or her. House of Carpets, Furniture and Appliances are currently focussing on Beach House Furniture and Fabric Sofas where you can choose the fabric to be used for your sofa. They also sell everyday household appliances, furniture, quality beds and mattresses – just another part of expanding their business and giving the customers choices, which ultimately leads to satisfaction.
