The beautiful Elgin Valley
The Overberg Business Magazine was invited “to take a trip beyond the city lights, have a food experience and a window into what the local producers from the rural areas beyond, are up to”. We could just not miss such an opportunity! This two day event was organised by Rabbit in a Hat Communications and included a net-working opportunity with Cape Country Meander suppliers. Networking is a very important aspect of business in my opinion, and all about building good solid business relationships with other business owners. I always have two questions on my mind when participating at such an event; can I make use of the business offerings, and if not, will I be able to promote those particular businesses?
Oak Valley Estate
On the first day we had lunch at The Poolroom, Oak Valley Estate along with a wine tasting of Oak Valley wine with the owner of the farm and the Wine Maker, Quentin Gobregts. Gordon Manuel is the new owner-chef at The Pool Room Restaurant. The Pool Room opened in November 2012. We were treated to delicious, beautifully prepared food and exquisite wines. This was followed by a short tour of Oak Valley’s sustainable piggery and free range cattle fields. Oak Valley is one of Elgin’s oldest family estates.
Old Mac Daddy
We checked in at Old Mac Daddy for the night, and what a pleasant sur-prise! In our articles in The Overberg Business Magazine we often talk about not just being different but unique and this was just that! Old Mac Daddy is set in a beautiful corner of the Elgin Valley. It is part caravan-park, part designer farm lodge. It offers endless activities; hiking, biking, fishing, swimming and the list goes on. It is also a brilliant venue for conferences, meetings, break-away sessions, celebrations and even weddings. I absolutely have to quote from the little brochure I got from the front desk: “Conceived of the pine tree utopia of an apple-pie-and-splashing-creek holiday, born of the fresh air fruit orchards and water-melon-chin memories of childhood; Old Mac Daddy Luxury Trailer Park is a new chapter in adventure, escapism and pure relaxation”.
The same evening we met the Cape Country Meander’s local suppliers, and networked with the area’s tourism players at Cape Country Connect – a showcase of the ‘Cape Country Meander tourism offering.
The Hickory Shack
A cosy breakfast awaited us at The Hickory Shack the next morning – Elgin’s very own smoke-house. Owner, Jay Haupt, joined us and explained the smoke-house technique. Jay had been exploring traditional food production methods for a number of years. What a great way to complete our trip.
